Ok so I woke up this morning to a huge fruit and vegetable market right outside my hotel. It was full of the cutest little old greek men and women. Followed the signs to meteora but of course I somehow managed to take a wrong turn and ended up in the residential part of this greek town and felt like I was walking through people's yards. Although they dont really have yards in Greece. Managed to get myself back to the center of town and got lost trying to find a sign to meteora. Almost ended up walking right back to my town but I finally found a sign and got back on track.
Started the hike up the side of the road to the first monastery. But once I got there I found out that it was closed that day. But I hiked up the stairs until I reached a giant locked gate. Decided to keep on going to the next one. Tour buses full of old people would drive past me and honk.
Made it to the second monastery and saw the signs for the washroom. Went to check it out only to find a porcelain hole in the ground. Oh joy. Had to take a picture haha. I sat down on a bench at the top and this cute black and white cat came and sat down on my lap right away.
Women cannot go into the monastery wearing pants, you have to be wearing a long skirt. Luckily they have a basket full of skirts you can use. So I put one on walked around. There was a tour group there so that made it a little hard. But I got to see the church of transfiguration. The whole ceiling and all the walls were painted like the sistine chapel in a way.
I decided to make the long trek back down from the monasteries. I ran into an older canadian gentleman on the way down and he told me to keep an eye out for the rock climbers. I took a few pictures of them but they are hard to see. You might be able to see them in a few of the pics.
Was so exhausted by the time I got back to the hotel I crashed for a bit and then had a shower before walking around the town to get dinner. There was a soccer match on tv so all the men were in the pubs and bars watching while all the women were working in the restaurants. Interesting.
All in all, Meteora was one of the most amazing places I have ever been. The pictures really don't do the place justice at all. You really have to see them first hand. It was just such breathtaking scenery that I didn't want to leave. That and I had amazing weather.
