Nov.11/06 We left early to spend the day in Colonial Williamsburg. Williamsburg began reconstruction in 1930 when John Rockefeller Jr. founded the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and donated $65,000.00 for the reconstruction since then The Rockefeller family has donated in excess of $60,000,000 to this project. This area spans 301 acres, hosts 88 original buildings and more than 500 reconstructed architectural homes, government buildings, trade shops and taverns. They say that you could take 2 days to see everything. We picked some to view as we only had 1 day. We got started with an Orientation Walk to get our bearings. We listened to the Public Audience with Thomas Jefferson, a tour through the Capitol building which housed the Colonial government of Virginia, the building included the court, the Legislature room, House of Burgesses and the Conference room in the middle where disagreements were solved on the 2nd floor. We went through the Public Hospital which was built in 1737 for the mentally ill. For Veterans Day they had a parade down the main street and welcomed all veterans to join them.
On the way back we stopped at the Williamsburg Pottery Factory - a shopper and bargain hunters delight!! It has expanded into 200 acres with 32 buildings and an inventory of 70,000 different items gathered from all over the world. They had a plan showing another expansion to take place next year.
