Bhutan and Thailand November 2006 travel blog

Hello all. We actually have CNN here and we are thrilled to hear about the election results. We're taking up a collection for poor Donald Rumsfeld since he is now unemployed.

Last evening we had a fascinating meeting with a man who consults for the government- he filled us in on the challenges and the ideas for the future. Like most developing countries they need more jobs for all of the young people they are educating. Yet, they also have to make things fit with their Buddhist religion. There was a small but growing company making and exporting ties for fly fishing but the government closed them down because fly fishing involves harm to the fish.

Today we visited a place where they hand make paper from tree bark. A fascinating process and beautiful result.

Tomorrow we head back to Paro and will try to hike to one of the most famous monastaries called Tiger's Nest. It is a very steep hike at 10,000 feet so I think we will only make it half way where there is a tea house we can visit. There are a couple of women in their 60s in the group who will probably be at the top while I am still struggling to make it half way. Maybe when I'm 60 I'll be as strong as them!

That's about all for now.

Love, D and J
