Hello all. It is Wed at 4:30 pm here and we just arrived back in the capital from our long journey to the country side.
Since I last wrote we have visited the Flaming Lake which is really a deep gorge of a river considered sacred because of something involving flame and treasure finding in the 1400s. It was a beautiful place to hike. Jamie and I then had the opportunity to spend an hour walking around the village of Boomthang and we both feel it was one of the best hours of the trip. We saw the theatre multiplex- 2 corrugated metal buildings set up in the football field with dirt floors showing movies at scheduled time. Just find a patch of dirt, sit back, and relax- sorry, no popcorn.
We also spoke with the owner of the pharmacy who is a nurse! She worked in the local 40 bed hospital which has and OR, and ER, and a delivery room. We spoke with a shop keeper who's 3 year old son was playing a video game on her cell phone! The highlight was a young girl (10) who, after we said hi, asked us where we were from, what our jobs were, and engaged us in a wonderful conversation. She was such a delight. Her friend that was with her did not know English because she doesn't go to school, we were told her Mom can't afford it- apparently the books and uniform. The friend was 8 and had a baby strapped to her back.
On our drive the next day we stopped to speak with a couple of women making gravel which I think I described before. Jamie had a chance to try his hand at it and couldn't meet the specifications so he was fired. we gave the women some crackers and some clothing.
Our inn last night was one we stayed at before but I was too sick to enjoy. It is right on a raging whitewater river-made me think of Nick! We went on a vigorous hike this morning with some incredible views of the mountains and area homes and terraced farms.
Tonight we are meeting with a Bhutanese dignitary before dinner.
The food has been ok- lots of cooked vegies and rice.
I think that's enough for now. We're sending out prayers for the election.
Love, Denise and Jamie
