Our bus ride from Inle was terrible. The 3 of us managed to get the back bench of the bus. I thought I got lucky with the window seat but my hopes were shattered as a nice piece of plastic stuck into my side and shoulder making it impossible to rest my head against the window. What we thought would be an easy 12 hour overnight ride ended up being one of the roughest rides I had had traveling. We all managed a few minutes of shuteye.
I didn't know what to expect going to Mandalay. I knew the military government regulated things a bit more strictly, so I was curious. I really liked Mandalay though, moreso than Rangoon. The people were great as usual and the kids loved following you around. Pete actually went out for a walk and after buying something a $10 bill fell out of his pocket. A local kid saw this and ran, got the bill, and caught up with Pete to give it back. The locals here are the kind of great people who make traveling such an amazing and unique experience.
Our nights were spent playing gin rummy. Every hour or so the fans and lights would shut off, we'd wait a few minutes in the darkness, then the generator would kick back on and we'd get back to the cards. Day in and day out they deal with electricity this way.
