The Banyon Tree in Lahaina

We came to Maui Monday night on a quick, but pretty rough and not very fun flight from Oahu. I love Maui...was here 7 years ago and not much has seemd to have changed here since then. We stayed with Emily, another former Hopkins employee-turned-traveller who is working as a nurse at a small hospital here. She had a beautiful, oceanfront condo which faced Haleakala. We got up at the crack of dawn Tues morning (around 3:30 a.m) to make the winding drive up to the summit of Haleakala to see the sunrise. The sunrise did not disappoint...watching the sky change colors and reflecting off the clouds below...just breath-taking.

Since we were already awake, we decided to make the day long trip driving the road to Hana. It is more a trip that is about the journey and not the destination. The winding road along the coast is spectacular and is lined with lush forests, waterfalls, and beaches with multi-colored sands. We made many stops along the way to take some short hikes and to take in all of the sights. Damage from the recent earthquake had condemed one of the bridges, so we weren't able to make the entire drive, but what we did see was spectaular. When we got back to Emily's, we even had enough energy left to go out and have a drink at a bar in Kihei, but we pretty much crashed around 11:00pm.

Today, we had a relaxing day on the beach in Ka'anapali and then wandered around Lahaina for a bit. It was a nice day to just lay around and get some sun.
