| Today we entered the western corridor of the serengeti. The serengeti is dry flat landscape with sporadic acacia trees huge open planes like the africa you conjure up in you imagination. The western corridor was pretty but full of 1000's of tetsi flys which are the size of blue bottles but have a fearsome sting much worse than a mosquito and they carry sleeping sickness . Luckily you can see them coming as they fly slowly but you have to really wack them to kill them or spray them with DOOM my fav african product kills all flying beasts but will char your lungs if you spray too much which is a slight down side but when it comes to the tetsi fly it means chemical warfare. On the way we saw 2 male lions with thier kill, a zebra, having a full scale tug of war with a croc only won by the lions when their mum helped them out. Just like out of a david Attenborough film. That night we wild camped we were all prepped by charles as to camp safety building big enough fire, people on the roof of the truck to watch the camp all night and all out tents tightly packed to prevent lions walking throught the camp. Then the stories of the worst thing to ever happen in this particular camp site start to come out .......... The last time a particular drago crew had camped here they very stupidly went to the loo at dusk maybe 50m from our tents he tried to open the loo door which opened inwards and felt a bit of resistance then he pushed a bit more and heard a massive raw. There was a lion sleeping on the floor of the loo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lions like the cold floor of the loo like a cat likes to lie in front of the fire. Nice huh so steph and i resolve only to pee behind the tent what ever time of day or night and to always go in pairs which to be fair is what charles had told us to do. That night steph and i were in the tents the fire nicely stooked and we had turned in early it had been a long day our mate hiliary was still sitting by the campfire with a few others the night watch were yet to get up on the roof to kip up there. And a hyena bare facedly walked between the tents and went over to the fire sniffed arround at this point hiliary jumps on the truck and get the fire extinguisher ,what she thought she was going to do with it even she has no idea ,and announces to the camp what we have in our midst charles in his tent cant get out to help. me fast asleep slept throught the whole drama. Remember most essential bit of african camping kit EAR PLUGS. |
