Had a great day in Charleston, South Carolina today. The seashore here is nothing like the Pacific Coast. We went to a place called Isle of the Palms thinking we would spend a little time walking on the beach. We had a difficult time finding access that wasn't private and no public piers at all. I think this is all the upper crust living at this place. It was really pretty but where are all the marinas and shops? We asked several people about sport fishing but no one knew anywhere that you could go out.

After David decided that this wasn't going to be a good place to go fishing out of, we headed for Fort Sumter. We made reservations for 2:30 so had a few hours to kill. Naturally, this meant more walking, so off we went (after Boston, we learned to pay more attention to exactly where we are parked). Historic Charleston was really nice. The old buildings and the market area were especially enjoyable. There were many vendors making Sweetwater grass baskets in the market area and on the streets. Apparently it is one of the oldest African American crafts still surviving. The baskets are beautiful and expensive but I can see they are worth the money because they are so labor intensive to produce.

Next stop was Bubba Gump's Shrimp Company for lunch. It was a fun place to eat. The waitress quizzed us on Forrest Gump trivia, which we were able to pass with the help of the couple next to us. It was good food and fun.

We wondered over to the dock to catch the ferry to Fort Sumter. . .check your history kids. The first shots of the civil war were fired here and a terrible battle followed. The Fort was very interesting and the tour boat ride enjoyable. Dozens of dolphins played alongside the boat as we cruised along. The entire tour was 2½ hours. We were happy that it was a beautiful sunny day.

A strange thing happened while we waited for the boat. We actually ran into someone from Carson City. Gene Paslov, the former superintendent of schools, was there with a group of former and retired superintendents on a tour. Naturally he and David struck up a conversation and, naturally, had mutual acquaintances. It truly is a small world. While we were cruising to the island, I overheard another lady talking about running into someone she knew from her home town. Funny!

It was a really fun day which we enjoyed immensely. I guess the weather will be nice for a few days so we have to take advantage of every minute and see as much as we can. On Sunday we will head for St. Augustine, Florida. I think David has arranged fishing from the campground there (hopefully).
