We've spent the last 5 days in lovely Slovenia, firstly up north in the mountains in Bled and then down on the coast in Piran.
Bled was a beautiful place set in the Julian Alps. The hostel was run by an old Slovenian man called Damien who fussed over us like grand children. We went for a walk one day and saw the waterfall, the water was a deep green colour. We also walked around the town, which is set around a lake, and saw the castle. The church you can see in the photo is on an island in the middle of the lake.
We spent the last few days in Piran, on the coast, which we got to via Ljubljana. We had a couple of hour to have a quick look around the city centre. It was really pretty, with a canal running through and lovely cobblestone streets.
Piran is a sea-side resort that is as much Italian as Slovenian. Lots of Pizza and pasta restaurants. We ate fairly well and also very cheaply. Rachael had black octopus risotto one night, it was as black as midnight because of them using squid ink. I'm not sure how she managed to eat it.
Tonight we're in Milan having an unexpected stopover. We caught the train from Piran to Venice and then to Milan, and then were supposed to move onto Lugano in Switzerland but the train got into Milan too late.
We'll continue to switerland tomorrow and settle in Lauterbrunnen for a few days.
We'll email again from there soon.
