The familiar face of Lenin

A camel goes to market

Typical wooden house, typical clapped out Lada

Had a day to walk round the capital of Siberia which seems no more than a medium sized town to me. A cool place to walk round though, I mixed it with the locals and went into the food market to stock up for the next leg on the train. All the food is bought from various counters (ie meat, fish, fruit etc), you don't walk around with a trolley. I think this is a remnant of the Soviet system where everyone got the same amount of the same thing.

It's an obvious thing to say but I really know I'm in Siberia walking around here as there's much less western influence than Moscow- from the Lenin bust and mural to the wooden houses and the friendly looking faces of the Buryats (ethnic Siberians), it's Russia as real as it gets.
