A lighthouse on Robben Island

This was our first day in Cape Town and since it was cloudy and rainy, it was the perfect day to visit a prison. Robben Island is located in Table Bay just about 7 and 1/2 miles off the coast of Cape Town and is most famous for the fact that Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his life imprisoned there. Heather and I took the ferry across and joined a tour group around the island.

The tour brought us around the island and eventually to the prison. The history of the island is fascinating starting several hundred years ago including a time when it was a leper colony. The prison tour was lead by a former inmate of the prison, which made the experience even more real and interesting.
