West Battery

View of Columbia River from Top of West Battery

This morning I walked around the Fort Stevens Military Reservation, which is northwest of Hammond and not far from the RV park. It guarded the mouth of the Columbia River from the Civil War until World War II. Around the turn of the last century, eight concrete gun batteries were constructed. All the guns have been removed but nearly all the batteries remain. After the army coast artillery abandoned Fort Stevens, many of the buildings were demolished but some of the foundations remain.
