We left New York State on Wednesday 18th August, travelling through Pennsylvania along the southern shore of Lake Eire. This is more like an inland sea than a lake as it is so big, as are the other Great Lakes. We stopped off at a place called Geneva on the Lake, which is actually in Ohio. It was an immaculate campsite with great facilities. Ironically in the midst of such luxury, the frontier spirit overcame Sarah, who insisted that the evening be spent around a log fire, following that well-known pioneer pursuit - roasting marshmallows. Rising to the challenge, Richard used all the skill and cunning that comes from being a natural frontiersman. Twenty minutes later Richard, having purchased logs and fire lighters from the camp shop, Sarah was ensconced before a raging inferno, giving herself second degree burns from hot melted marshmallow (See pic).
I have always thought that in small town America, the drugs store was the centre of social life, but this seems to have been replaced by a modern alternative, the Internet café. These cafés are really very nice places, warm and friendly, where you are actually encouraged to stay. There are comfortable sofas, books, games, chess/draught tables, and the food is good and very reasonably priced. Internet access is free although you are expected to buy some refreshments, such as cinnamon buns, cheesecake or tasty bagels. Yes, you can imagine how hard we found that!
