In the midst of this hard sediment grew a sunflower!

Today we headed on a car ride heading east on I-90. All along the way, there were signs for Wall Drug in the small town of Wall, SD. Wall Drug was started in 1931 by Ted and Dorothy Hustead. By the summer of 1936, the business had not grown much and it seemed that a lot of cars were going by without stopping at their store. Then Dorothy came up with the idea to put a sign on the highway offering free ice water. Well, the rest is history!

The business has grown from a small pharmacy to a huge store where you can find just about anything you'd want from leather goods to souvenirs to a T-Rex and giant Jackalope. There's also some beautiful western art and lots of photos of both Native Americans and ranchers from the area. It is a must stop place if you're in the area. And it's a great way to get out of the heat. It was 104 degrees there today!

Then if that wasn't warm enough, we then headed a little further east to drive the Badlands scenic loop. This area is so stark (and hot!!), yet beautiful in its own way. The ground is eroding at about an inch a year and although it looks like mountains, it's actually sediment left from a salt sea 500,000 years ago. Amid all the peaks, there are areas of prairie grasslands. Definitely a different looking part of our country!
