Sunrise over the volcano

At the local football match!

We managed a morning swim down at the beach after breakfast before setting off for the volcano (Gunung Rinjani) at midday. While we were waiting for Vic and Rich to check out Matt started an impromptu game of keepy-uppy (with his Malay wicker football) with the local guys at the hotel.. We had spectacular scenery again as we went up the east coast of Lombok. We had a slight moment of worry as Rich went down a one way street the wrong way and we were pulled up by a policeman. If Matt was fined for not turning on a red light surely Rich was in for a big fine?! Luckily the policeman was smiling and very helpful so all we left with were directions rather than a whole in the wallet!

We finally managed to find a place for lunch by the roadside after about an hour of looking. We were treated to a great fried rice/ noodles for the grand price of 5000 rupia or 30p!

The climb up towards the volcano was amazing and we got an amazing view at one of the rims before heading down to the small village of Sembalun Lawang. We were planning on finding a guesthouse and guides from here to trek up to the main crate rim at 2700m, and possibly onto the summit at 3700m.

Unfortunately we were having major trouble finding any of the recommendations in the Lonely Planet until we stumbled upon one on our way out of the village. Luckily Armasih (who was to be our guide) was driving past on his moped so took us to a great guesthouse where we struck a deal to do a 2 day 1 night trek with him guiding us and 3 of his porter friends to carry food, water and camping gear for us.

Comedy moment of misunderstanding by Vic of Armasih's English....he said he had managed to find thicker mattresses for us to which point I asked Vic what he had said...she replied 'He's got Tikka know-so we can have curry' we laughed!

After another great Indonesian dinner at the guesthouse, and a few Bintang Beers it was time for an early night as we had to get up at 6am!
