While in Indianapolis, I took in the Museum at the Indy 500 Speedway. I have been to Daytona numerous time and althogh the tracks are both 2 1/2 miles in length, Indy seems to be much larger. I was fotunate in that they were offering a 1 1/2 hour grounds tour as opposed to the normal lap around the track in a van.

We made stops at the start finish line, media center, race control, victory lane and drove through gasoline alley. Other than the type of pavement, the track itself is exactly the same as when it was built in 1909. Of course all of the buildings and grandstands have been replaced several times.

Originally, it was planned to hold only one race a year, the Indy 500, at the track. Now, in addition to the 500, NASCAR holds two races and Formula 1 has two races a year at the track.
