Morning mist over Big Bay

Endeavour Inlet over Deep Bay

Untitled (2003) : wood, shells, metal, seaweed

We made it to breakfast at 7.30 and enjoyed Eggs Benedict before making our way up the hill to get onto the ridge and then climbed steadily to the Bay of Many Coves Saddle. It was quite tough going but it was much cooler today and misty, which in many ways, makes for better walking conditions. Of course the views weren't so good as a result, but it created a bit of atmosphere, plus we could now see into Kenepuru Sound which was a bonus.

Although it was supposed to take 8 hours, we managed it in six, arriving in Portage just as the sun came out. After a hard day, we enjoyed a beer at the rather swish Portage Resort and bumped into Bob and Ian again who had arrived earlier.

After a while we left to go and pitch our tent in the neighbouring campsite in Cowshed Bay. We found a nice spot and cooked our dinner (a particularly tasteless risotto) and then took a walk on the beach. We were particularly proud of our arty sculpture made out of driftwood, metal and shells, inspired by Andy Goldsworthy. It was meant to fall down as the tide came in but we had built it too well and it survived the night.
