Down Under Tour '04 travel blog

Slight panic yesterday when I learnt that 'Bello', where I was heading next had been inaccessible the day before due to flooding (Coffs Harbour had so much rain in the space of an hour that the road outside the hostel went from dry to a foot under water, although this didn't seem to stop the locals driving as though nothing unusual was going on) but fortunately by thursday the roads had re-opened. The drive in through the coast was through countryside reminiscent of landscapes that I think of as quintisentially (sp?) English - gently undulating, green and pleasant land reflecting nature at her most benign. It may lack the spectacle and grandeur of other parts of the world, but it's a landscape I find inherently beautiful nonetheless.

The hostel here is great, with a very laid back feel and a big veranda looking out through the trees to the river, and on to the mountains beyond. Also comes complete with a cat, chickens (fresh laid eggs avaiable in the kitchen every morning), a large bearded lizard who visits from time to time (and who has been christened Nigel for reasons that are unclear), and even some exotic green birds that fly down to sit on the table.
