THURSDAY, JUNE 22, 2006. KHUTAG-ONDOR TO AMARBAYASGALANT TEMPLE, MONGOLIA. Another full day of driving brought us to Amarbayasgalant Temple, about a seven hours' drive northwest of UB. The highlight of the day's drive was coming across a stream with several dozen horses getting a drink and frolicking in the water. They are truly beautiful and magnificent animals. Mongolia is THE place to visit if you like horses.

Our ger was located just outside the walls of the temple. This temple is considered one of the three most important Buddhist temples in Mongolia. It was originally built in the early 18th Century in the Manchu style by the Manchu emperor Yongzheng, and dedicated to the great Mongolian Buddhist and sculptor, Zanazabar. We arrived just before sunset, which gave me an opportunity to wander and take photos of the temple complex under good lighting conditions. Except for a couple of young monks painting, I had the temple complex all to myself.
