FORT WHITE, FL: The Ichnetucknee Springs State Park had a special "Dawn Patrol" donw the springs a 5AM. There were 10 boats, and of course there had to be one person who thought they knew more about the area than the ranger that worked there.
We put in as soon as it was light enough to see and were on the springs for a good 20-30 minutes before it was really daylight. Wow was it great, as it always is when you are in the woods at daylight.
We we were able to see beavers, racoons, egrets, herons and turkesys flying down from their roost early in the morning. There sure were a lot, I wish i could see that many when I am in the woods turkey hunting.
When we were done it was about time for th park to open for the tubers. They limit the North end to 750 tubers a day. So we went and rented a tube and went back to the North end to launch. What a differnece from the morning. The tubers were filled with kids, old people, fat people and there were entirely too many especially at the beginning of the springs. There it is pretty narrown and with that many people getting in all at once, its a zoo. But the rangers check everyone before they get in the water, nothing disposable can go down the river. Therefore, there is virtually no trash on the river. But that also means that you can't have a beer are three going down the river. Its about a 3.5 hour float down to the South end.
But the water is cold and with a mask and snorkel there is a lot to see. The springs are crystal clear so you can see 30-40 feet down.
After getting back to the Spirit of the Suawannee Music Park, we took a quick nap and got us something to eat. Then it was time to head over to the Music Hall to see T.G. Shepherd. The man has been around a while. He as 20 number one country songs and his tour bus is a 45 foot, triple slide, Prevost motorcoach. So i guess he has made some money too.
He had a warm up band play first and then he played one set that lasted about an hour and half. I didnt recognize his songs but he and the band did sound good.
