The Acropolis

A typical guard in Athens...

Daniel here,

I have spent the last couple of days taking in the sights of Athens and munching on the local Greek cuisine, mostly the "Gyros", made exactly how late night kebabs should be, plenty of meat and sauce.

After resting up I decided to take on the heat and see the sights. First on the list was the must see Acropolis. Perched high on a hill overlooking the city it is impossible to miss, and I spent a couple of hours marvelling at the buildings (even though it was covered in scaffolding) and trying to imagine how anyone could build such a thing, especially over 2000 years ago. Next was a walk through the Ancient Agora, where they have excavated what is left of the city which has been rebuilt, invaded, destroyed and rebuilt more times than you could believe, persistent bunch these Greeks. Also covered was the Theatre of Dionyssos, the Arch of Adrian, and the Temple of the Olympian Zeuss - all for which you needed plenty of imagination as there was not much left bar the impressive pillars.

The city of Athens has been great, with the hostel located in the Plaka district, with cobbled pedestrian streets and countless restaraunts and specialty shops. The newest of the sights is the very impressive Parliament Building in the main square of Syntama - I think 2000 years from now people will be marvelling over this Place!

So now time is up and its back to London tonight to catch up with Sarah and Frosty again and help warm their new house and cheer on the Soccaroos vs Craotia. Hope everyone is well.

Daniel
