After a morning hike through the park we caught the 11:40 AM bus from Plitvice National Park to Zagreb. In Zagreb we walked from the bus station to the train station and as luck would have it the train was late. This allowed us to buy tickets and step aboard just as the train was leaving for Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia - a country the size of New Jersey with only 2 million people. The train followed the Sava River and the scenery was very bucolic, as Mom would say. Lindsay thought it was pretty cool that we got our own compartment, but she got a little too comfortable. At the border crossing the Slovenian immigration official, who came to stamp our passports, told her to "get your feet off the seat or I'll give you a ticket". I started to laugh because I thought he was kidding, but he looked at me and said, "Is something funny?" with an incredibly stern face. I removed the smile from my face, and Lindsay removed her feet from the seat.

As we pulled into Ljubljana snow covered peaks suddenly appeared out of nowhere. They were the Julian Alps to the north which we would eventually be driving through.

We followed Mom's instincts and arrived at the Celica Youth Hostel, a former prison. The rooms in the hostel have been uniquely decorated by artists in various styles while retaining the barred doors and small room size of the original cells. It was the opening match of the World Cup and there was a moderate party unfolding.

We went out for pizza in the center, walked around the town and saw all the cool people. Ljubljana is known for its alternative scene in music, art and fashion.
