The hogar Suyapa has been open for 3 years originally to take in children from the nutrition center who didnt have famillies. There are currently 23 children, and no room for more. The do however occasionally accept kids for a few days at a time. This will happen if there is a family dispute and the children are taken away by the police.

The staff has to agree to work for at least three years at the hogar, for the kids sake. They want every child to have a mother, or to identify to one of the staff. At any given time there are 2 caregivers, a cook, 2 maintenance staff, a driver and a laundry lady! She literaly does the laundry (old fashioned way) ALL day 6 days a week! Just imagine how much laundry 24 kids makes! At night there are only 2 caregivers.

As volunteers, we play with the kids in the afternoon and at bedtime. We{ve also been lucky enough to help with their english homework! We also attempt to discipline, but as you can imagine speaking a small amount of spanish is not very helpful! We have become very close with the staff, they treat us like their daughters and have made our stay here a million times better!
