Today we traveled to Ajo, AZ. After setting up the motor home, we unhitched the Tracker and headed to the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. The National Monument is located near the Mexican Boarder in the Sonoran Desert. We have never been this far south in Arizona and found the landscape to be quite inhospitable. After stopping at the visitors center we drove the Ajo Mountain Drive. This is a 21-mile dirt road that winds and dips over a route that blends with the landscape. We discovered that there are many different varieties of Cacti. The large type of cacti that is seen in western movies is Saguaro Cactus. We also saw cactus similar to the cactus we have in Florida, called Organ Pipe Cactus. One of the most interesting we discovered was the Chain-Fruit Cholla. It is very pretty and looks like it is covered in white fuzz. The Prickly Pear Cactus is also found in Florida but not nearly as large as in Arizona. When returning to our motor home we had to go through a US Border Patrol checkpoint. The Border Patrol is looking for illegal aliens from Mexico. We have had hot windy days with cool nights. It is difficult to drive the motor home due to strong gusty crosswinds
