April 15 - Savannah! It is one of my favorite places, and it was great getting to show it off to Trish and Alan.
It was only one degree from breaking a heat record, but we walked several miles - from the tourist center (where we had cheap parking) down through the City Market to the waterfront area. There were several private boats in at the wharf, but none that we recognized.
We wandered around the restored riverfront area, sampling pralines, peanuts and salt water taffy and admiring some fine art work. We stopped at the statue of the waving girl cast in honor of the woman who waved at every ship entering Savannah for fifty years (the story is that she was watching for her sailor love to return, but he never did), and then up along the Factor's walk to Bull St. From there we walked through several of the squares, stopping for photos, lunch at a sidewalk café, and at the Mercer House, the setting for the book 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil', which has brought many readers to Savannah where there are now tours pointing out all the places mentioned in the book. Our walk ended at the fountain at Forsyth Park. Not quite - we still had to walk back to the car!
After supper we watched the 'Midnight' DVD that we bought on our travels, and it was great seeing the places on film that we had just seen in person.
