Becky's Europe and Africa Trip 2006 travel blog

As you guessed I have now reached Cape Town which has way too many things to cram into the 5 days that I have here, but I'll try. I'm still travelling with some of the people from the safari which is great because I'm going to miss them so much when I leave. Luckily two of them live in Canada so hopefully I'll have a chance in the future to visit them, and vise versa. We tried to climb Table Mountain today but it closed down due to high winds, then we tried to go to Robben Island (where they held Nelson Mandela in Prison) but all the boats were full so now we will soon be heading to the markets which we pray are open, but who knows since it is a long weekend. But Cape Town is beautiful and it is nice to have a break from tents for a change.

Namibia was a magnificant country where I had the chance to see more that I expected. I forgot to write about my trip to a Cheetah farm, not in the true sense of the world farm, I guess more like a sanctuary. They had there 3 cheetahs that are more like huge house cats where we got to pet them and get our photos taken with them. Then we went on a cheetah cruise to see the wild cheetahs - I have some amazing vidoe footage of that! This farm is family runned and is comprised of "problem" cheetahs that would have otherwised been killed by local farmers. The family who started the project realized how many cheetahs were being killed every year by farmers who lost some of their animals to them, so they took action by forming this sactuary. Its a beautiful little place with a bar and a pool (we actually camped out there for the night) with all proceeds going directly to cheetah sanctuary.

I did a desert walk in the Namib desert with this amazing Japanese guide that seemed like she's lived there her whole life. Maybe 8 years could seem like a lifetime. Learned a lot about the different animals that live in the desert and how they can live in the desert with so little sustainting themselves. We climbed over a few dunes, the highest which 3 of us had a sprinting race down, it felt unbelievable to go so fast and not fall!We also climbed Dune 45 to watch the sunrise, a large dune in the Namib desert, but not the highest.

We spent the second last night at a camp site on Orange River, which is actually brown not orange, although at night it did have an orange tinge to it. That was the night for the farewell party because it was more intimate there then here at the lodge in Cape Town. The party was great, and maybe a little sad knowing that its all over soon, but I'm lucky that I get an extra week in South Africa. I really can't believe how time flies, it does not feel like i have been away from home as long as I have been. I'm staying in Cape Town until either the 20 or 21st of April, then visiting a dear friend in Pretoria until when we fly out on the 26. Lysney and i will arrive back in Edmonton almost at midnight on 27 April which makes everything very rushed for her since her sister is getting married on the 29!! I hope you are all doing great and I will see most of you soon!!
