WA: Climb Frenchman's Peak & explore Cape Le Grand NP1 Feb 2006 |

| About 5km from where we're camping we can see Frenchman's Peak, a massive granite hill rearing up from the flat lands of the National Park. We need some exercise and the views are supposed to be fantastic from the top, so we decide to walk there and climb it. They're not kidding about the views once you get to the top, but it's a helluva climb (photo with Frenchman's Peak in background). It rises up about 260 metres and some of sections to get to the top are really steep - seriously testing for my fear of heights. But the view from the top is just dazzling - white, white beaches and clear blue water dotted with the islands of the Recherche archipelago. Magic stuff. We have lunch at the top, then clamber down (which is much easier than climbing up) for the walk home. Try to find a track through the scrub, but decide against it in the end, as it looks pretty snake infested. Ready for a swim when we get back to camp. Next day we're up to do some more exploring of the park - this time by car though as the legs are in shock from yesterday's exercise. Thistle Bay is gorgeous, Lucky Bay has kangaroos loafing on the beach and the only bummer is that the water is so cold, it's hard to stay in for too long. Decide to spend the night at Cape Arid National Park, which is further east again by about 70km. Get there late arvo and Stu gets out the fishing kit to catch some dinner off the rocks by the beach below the campsite. I amuse myself by watching what looks like a serious domestic between a husband and wife seagull pair. She follows him relentlessly screeching, while he tries to wander away from her - I don't want any human comparisons drawn, but it was like watching a stereotype. Unfortunately the fishing gods aren't on his side and dusk is settling in, we decide to settle for red chicken curry for dinner instead. |
