Arriving in El Chalten

Tasting the Local Brew

Trekking in the Fitzroy Range

El Chalten has a real "wild west" feel about it, with its dusty streets and a few ramshackle buildings. The town was only established about 25 years ago to stop the Chileans encroaching over the border, but it is becoming increasingly popular with tourists as a gateway to Parque Nacional Los Glaciares.

We set off for another three days trekking and camping in the Fitzroy range, with its sharp granite towers, glacial lakes and clear streams of potable water. This was one of our favourite parks in Argentina, with some stunning scenery just a few hours walk from town. One moment we were wandering through a beech forest and the next hopping from rock to rock at the base of a glacier. We even found ourselves caught in a dust storm which blew up in moments, turning a peaceful lakeshore into a perilous place to be.
