Nixes On Tour travel blog

We've finally arrived at the Twelve Apostles, the sandstone outcrops off the Great Ocean Road which must be the most photographed part of Victoria, and are truly magnificent. They truly are best described by pictures.

By the time we arrive it's late afternoon, the flies are going absolutely berserk and it's pretty hot. After ingesting one as we walk around the visitors centre (not recommended) it's generally agreed that we should have our first taste of these wonders by air and investigate them more closely when it's not so hot.

The helicopter flight is short but sweet and gives a great view of the eleven remaining apostles (one fell down last year). The coastline really is quite amazing and you can see why they are so famous and so visited. I love helicopters, they always remind me of Skippy the bush kangaroo for some reason.

The nearest town to stay in is Port Campbell, about 10km down the road. It's a lovely town, on the coast and centred around the main beach, which sits in a sort of harbour with a jetty. Plenty of accommodation so we find a motel that, luxury of luxuries, has two rooms, so Mum has a night off listening to us snore.

The surf is up and there's some lunatics out there surfing killer waves, right off the jetty. Hope they're locals, because you wouldn't want to not know what you're doing out there. These kids are escaping death by rock ledge by centimetres. Great to watch.

The town must face west, because we get to watch a spectacular sunset sinking into the sea from the local pub as we have dinner. A great day all round.
