Exeter Island Hoppers Career Break 2005 travel blog

Crossed the Golden Gate Bridge and headed for the Sierra Nevada. The weather is hot and sunny, temp 71o and hadn't expected what was to follow ???

On reaching the state line of Nevada, the temperature started to drop, outside a cold wind and temp of 35o. The scenery became mountainous and with snow capped mountains and signs warning us of the need to carry snow chains/snow tyres we may need to change our plans of heading onto back roads. Signs were not good as we climbed into forest areas as the snow became thicker and more picturesque. The road was clear but the dramatic scenery was impressive and in places the snow was 4feet thick by the edge of the road.

Having found the main highway again we looped off to try to find accommodation for the night in Nevada City ( not the capitol, but a small town ) but rates were not cheap at $112+tax, very picture post-cardish but beyond the budget. The town had quaint wooden fronted houses with porches as depicted in the " Old Western Days " so back on the road towards Reno.

We had accommodation vouchers for several Motels in Reno, and decided to stay in the Days Inn and at $35+tax was much more within budget !!! Comfortable and clean with a continental breakfast in the morning, can't be bad.

Dressed in shorts & flip-flops they must have thought I was mad. Temperatures in the 30's and here was a mad Englishman dressed for summer, the whole night wandered around in the same attire, it was cold !!!!

Well the neon lights blasted you as hit the Casino clad streets, Circus-Circus, Silver Legacy, Eldorado all linked by walkways or you could take a shuttle train via the car parks. It was an experience, the massive halls filled with slot machines and gambling tables all available 24hrs !!! Will explore the halls tommorrow in FULL and join as members !!!
