here is some info from a website that attempts to sum up our feel of this energetic, beautiful and magical place. it has been one of our favorite places on this trip so far.
Punta del Este is one of the cities in Uruguay, the South American country that lies between Argentina and Brazil. Uruguay, known officially as the Republica Oriental del Uruguay, is approximately 187,000 square kilometers.
With a population of 3.2 million, Uruguay is the smallest Spanish-speaking country in South America. Punta del Este is one of the most popular resort areas in South America. Facing the bay on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, this tropical paradise offers a beautiful and unique getaway.
It is very difficult to define Punta del Este. Few places in the world are gifted with the magic and ambiguity of this one.
It is a destiny where the pines forests govern in perfect communion with the sea; at the same time, it is the most active in South America. There are the news, the personalities of the world and some of the most beautiful women.
One good way to enumerate the features which places it as an international seaside inserted into the Atlantic, is through its wonderful beaches, mansions surrounded by pines and unforgettable sunsets.
The truth is that Punta del Este is much more than a city, a landscape or a sunset. It is a way of living, prepared to offer always an alternative tailor made to its people.
Its endless coast offers two antagonistic landscapes known as La Mansa ("The Quiet") and La Brava ("The Brave"). Almost like day and night each one excites different passions.
At La Mansa, as its name indicates, the calm water, prevails the rest and the nautical sports. Its beaches are delimitated by pronounced bays, protected by vast pine woods.
For its sunsets and the tranquility of its water, Solanas is the traditional beach. A classic where we can see families with younger children.
In the opposite, La Brava places as the histrionic center of the "eastern action" through its pubs and beach restos, which become more active since the sunset. The coast is open to a embraved sea with immense waves which are the passion for surfers. For the fans of this sport, a must stop are Montoya and Bikini beaches, which are in La Barra, a neighborhood outside of the main action-packed glitz of Punta del Este. If Punta del Este yells beauty, La Barra whispers it. It is a place of action and serenity, but without the big city feel or skyscapers. La Barra is where your mind wanders, your body relaxes and your senses explore....
