Buenos Aries is a dramatic, romantic and sophisticated city. It is a large, complex, energetic, port city, and the capital of Argentina that stretches along the Rio de la Plata. Portenos, as the residents are called-- there are around 13 million of them-- have a rich and diversified cultural identity. Here Italian and German names outnumber Spanish, the lifestyle and architecture are more European than any other city in South America.
The city is an interesting blend where modern skyscrapers cast their shadows on 19th century houses and tango bars face dusty, treasure-filled, antique shops. Its infrastructure reflects its position as one of the world's largest cities.
While we were here, we dined on Argentinian steak in Palermo Viejo, watched in awe at a sexy tango show, walked the streets of La Boca with its brilliantly colored houses and restaurants, and shopped the hip and fashionable neighborhoods of Palermo Soho and Palermo Hollywood. We also strolled around the absolutely magnificant Recoleta cemetery. One may think that walking around a cemetery would not be much fun but we have never seen more stunning personal shrines, angels and statues made of wood, marble, steel, and granite. Against the powdery blue sky, the dark scenery was dramatic, emotional and breathtaking.
We hope these pictures tell a little story of our time in this fabulous and cosmopolitan city. It is easy to see why Buenos Aries is called "The Paris of South America." We easily fell in love with it...
