I had intended to stay in Franz Josef for another day but as the weather forecast was as dire for today I decided to get on the bus early.
We stopped at a cafe for breakfast and to do a little walk to Lake Matheson. On a clear day you can see the mountains reflected in the lake like a perfect mirror image. It was a beautiful sight, but not quite as good as the postcard picture I bought!!
The weather really did not improve so we didn't do a lot of the stops which we should've done. We did stop at Thunder Creek Falls briefly which was a nice waterfall. Then we headed up the steep Haast Pass road through the mountains.
Once over the other side of the mountains the scenery changed dramatically, as too did the weather. I'd dozed off and woke up to find myself looking at a massive lake in the sunshine! We stopped at Lake Hawea to take a few photos, before driving into Wanaka at about 3.
We spend the afternoon wandering around the town and sitting down by Lake Wanaka. It's a beautiful little town.
