Hello Again,
It is the ninth of December and we have arrived in St. Augustine, North Florida.
The pictures attached are from South Carolina and Georgia.
Both cities are similar in many ways but the most charming award has to go to Charleston, South Carolina.
Savannah was more difficult to appreciate initially but when you begin to understand how the original settlement was planned with many town squares around which were built beautiful manisons, taverns and churches it is easy to understand why it is a favorite hollywood location for movies about the south.
Both Charleston and Savannah want to take credit for the place where the first shots were fired that began the civil war so we are not sure where it actually began.
Slavery was the major issue behind the civil war. Since the south had longer growing seasons and required more labor for cotton, rice, and tobacco, they were in no rush to see slavery abolished. The wealthy people in the south owe most of their wealth to slavery.
We are about to begin to learn about the Spanish and their contribution to the new world. We do not remember this from history class but the Spanish beat the British to America by 100 years. More to follow!
Weather has been a little off color if you are a tourist, but it is to improve tommorow.
Fiday night pizza and beer again. Take care.
