Jaine's European Trip 2018 |
Welcome to my trip journal! I'm going on a trip to France and Germany from Sept. 10-26 and thought you might like to follow along. I tried this once before and it didn't work very well, but I'm hoping for better results this time.
My trip plan started out as just signing up for "Over There," a 100th anniversary guided tour of sites where the Americans were involved in World War I. I've been doing research on the life of my grandfather, Russell Sumner Gates (1897-1970), my mother's father, who was a member of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) and was wounded just before the WWI Armistice was signed in 1918. For 10 days, I'll be following his footsteps in France on a tour led by Battleground Historical Tours.
But then I decided that there was some research on other ancestors that I could also do near the route of this trip. So I've added on 5 days of travel in Alsace-Loraine and the German Rhineland province before the battlefield tour. Finally, I'm adding a couple days in Paris at the end of the trip, just because I've never been to Paris before and, well, when in Paris....
This blog is just my way of recording what I learn along the way and sharing it with you. If you want to see my itinerary, just click on the button above on the right. And, yes, I realize tall the names of the towns run together on the map. This map just shows you that I’m going to be in northeastern France most of the time. I’ll post another map of just Alsace-Loraine when I get there.
By the way, pay no attention to the dates on the list of entries below. Just know that the most recent entry is listed first. The dates seem to change every time I edit an entry, for some reason. Also, I’m having trouble uploading photos, so will try to sort that out.
