Where else but India could we find a monument to undying love, a temple full of erotic art, the holiest river in the world and sacred cows that have right of way everywhere you go?
We have three weeks to explore a country who's culture spans more than 4,500 years and who's land mass is the seventh-largest in the world.
India is the second-most populous country with over 1.2 billion people. Its economy is the world's tenth-largest and the fastest growing.
Interestingly India also has the world's most expensive private home which is currently lying unused and abandoned because its billionaire owners believe the 27-storey, billion-dollar tower in Mumbai has got some bad feng shui!
This is a land of extremes and the government has its work cut out for it in trying to narrow the gap between the haves and the have-nots.India still contains the largest concentration of people living below the World Bank's international poverty line of US$1.25 per day.
Traditional Indian society is defined by the relatively strict social hierarchy known as the caste system. Graeme and I both worked out based on our family history that we would have been born into the Vaisyas (business men or skilled workers) or the Sudras (unskilled workers)castes which at least isn't the Pariah (untouchables) caste!
