The Sauntering Sampsons

We're Kate and Tom Sampson, The Sauntering Sampsons, and this is our RV travel journal.

For years we've dreamed of traveling North America in an RV. We joined Good Sam in 2008, and began what turned out to be a rather long planning process.

We'd both camped as kids, and our first camping experiences as a couple began in the early 1990s, when we both had stressful corporate jobs. We purchased a small Coleman pop-up trailer and escaped from the daily grind on weekends and summer vacations. We really enjoyed those trips to the Finger Lakes and Adirondack Mountains of New York State.

After retiring (early) from our jobs in 2000, we eventually ended up in Hendersonville, NC. Western North Carolina is a beautiful part of the country and people come from all over the world to vacation there, but after a couple years, the wanderlust began to grow for both of us. We talked over the idea of eventually going "full time" rv-ing so that we could explore the United States and Canada. We talked with many people who had done just that. We never ran across anyone who regretted having made the decision to full-time. Many had eventually settled down to a permanent location after several years of travel, but they all encouraged us to follow our dreams while we were still "young enough" to enjoy them.

In April of 2014, we purchased a 2007 Coachmen Cross Country motor home. It's a 38 foot diesel pusher with a 300HP Cummins engine, and one slide out. It had 52,000 miles on it, which is barely broken in for a diesel engine, and had been kept garaged by the original owner so it looks nearly brand new.

Our dream was starting to become reality! The next step was to sell the house. Of course this was after the housing market had taken a large negative adjustment, and we knew we were going to lose quite a bit on the sale. But we decided that we could probably get enough of our equity back to finance this next phase of our life.

We sold the house in January, 2015, and our adventure begins.

In March 2015, we traded in the motor home and bought a 2015 RAM 3500 Dually and a 2015 Prime Time Sanibel Fifth Wheel RV. This provides a much roomier living space for us.
