Portugal and the Madeira Flower Festival

This holiday begins in a famous wine city, Porto, in the north of Portugal, where I plan to travel along the Douro river to visit some vineyards. The north, and especially the town of Braga, is famous for its Easter processions. After a week in the north, I'll head down the coast to the seaside village of Nazare, hopefully to enjoy freshly cooked sardines at a beachside restaurant.

Then to Lisbon for a few days to explore museums, castles, tram rides, cafes and azulejos - the beautiful Portuguese tiles. I'm looking forward to Portuguese tarts and coffee - this will be a test of my few words of Portuguese!

A short flight to the Portuguese island of Madeira, a tiny island lost in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa. During spring Madeira hosts a Flower Festival, with a flower mural and a parade of children dressed as flowers, while the many tropical gardens on the island showcase thousands of exotic plants and flowers in full bloom. And, of course, the island of Madeira is the home of Madeira wine.

After a week in Madeira, a short ferry ride to the even tinier island of Porto Santo for some walks along golden beaches and spa treatments, before a few days back in Lisbon.
