Clem and Pam's Australia and Papua New Guinea Diving Adventure 2007 |
|
Why Papua New Guinea? I have been trying to get Clem to become a diver for years. His excuse? Too much gear!!! Please........ Clem....... too much gear? That thought sounded impossible to imagine so I bought dive training for the both of us last Christmas. To soften the disappointment associated with this gift and to spur enthusiasm for training, I included a dive trip to Papua New Guinea which is one of the most pristine dive sites in the world. That got him in the water!
Our entire family took the SSI dive course through Choo Choo Dive Center (great training and people) in April and on May 18th (my 50th birthday) we drove to Panama City to receive our open water dive certifications. What a great day and an awesome time. Our dive instructor informed me that 50 was the new 30. I told her that a woman had obviously made that new rule. I had a new born baby at 30... no thanks ...50 is working fine for me.
From there we went to Baja California Sur, Mexico and dove the Coral Reefs at Cabo Pulmo. Lots of lessons learned!! Must have a 5mm wetsuit, don't believe everything that you read in travel literature about diving conditions and perfect times for diving, and always remember your C card. Cabo Pulmo was an incredible place for new divers to learn more and to attain experience. We saw an amazing number of fish and sealife species. Too bad we had to do it in 50 degree water. Oh yeah, must have hood too!!
Clem was amazing!! He has bouyancy mastered...of course...the man who didn't want to do this gets it right off the bat while me (la sirena) can't seem to stay off the bottom or keep from floating to the top! Lifes little injustices won't leave me alone!
After discovering that we could get to Australia on frequent flyer points all the sudden we realized that there was this awesome place to dive in Australia known at the Great Barrier Reed that was going to be right outside our door during our stay. Duh!! We must do that, we may never make it back to Australia, let's go see the great whites!! (just joking Mom) Anyway, we decided to book another dive trip while there to dive some of the awesome sites around the Great Barrier Reef before going on the Papau New Guinea. If you will refer to the map you will see that PNG is just a few hour flight from Cairns, Australia.
So with 15 dives under our belt and two training certifications we go in search of dive experience, new friends in and out of the water, and adventure! Thanks for tolerating our blathering about our trips and reading our journals. I hope we can offer some interesting reading about the region and our travels in the days to come.
