Northern Lights and Christmas Markets, 2018

A down jacket, a possum wool beanie and gloves, an alpaca jacket, merino tops and leggings - you name the natural fibre and I have packed it for this trip! Staying warm has been a major preoccupation as this trip involves several weeks above the Arctic Circle in late autumn. I have also packed snow chains for my boots and hot hand warmers.

After a few days to relax in Oslo, I will take one of the great train journeys of the world - from Oslo to Bergen (on the west coast of Norway) through snow-covered mountain passes. In Bergen I will join one of the small Hurtigruten cruise ships - the aptly named Polarlys (meaning Northern Lights) for a 7 day cruise along the Norwegian coast. To maximise my chances of seeing the Northern Lights, I'm also staying 4 nights in Tromso, Norway and 3 nights in Rovaniemi, Finland (both at or above the Arctic Circle). Rovaniemi is also the home of Santa Claus - so perhaps a reindeer sleigh trip to see Santa Claus might be in order!

I'm then heading to Strasbourg and Colmar in the Alsace region of France. Both of these towns are famous for their incredibly charming Christmas markets. A hop across the border to Freiburg in Bavaria, Germany where I will celebrate my birthday and Christmas, before returning home to Melbourne in end December.
