Today we drove the Pintler Veterans' Memorial Scenic Highway. This 64-mile drive goes from Anaconda, one of Montana's most historic towns, to Georgetown Lake, Philipsburg and ends in Drummond. The road travels through both conifer-clad mountains and sage-covered hills following the Flint Creek.
We made several stops along the way. We viewed the Anaconda Stack, it is more than 585 feet high and the world's tallest free standing masonry structures. One of the few remnants of Anaconda's huge copper smelting plants. We also enjoyed photographing a lot of the old Victorian homes in Anaconda.
We visited the town of Philipsburg for lunch. We wanted to visit the famous Candy Palace, but it was closed. We will definitely make a return trip to Philipsburg. It is a very neat little town.
Our next stop on the scenic drive was the old ghost town of Granite. The drive to see what is left of the town was quite exciting. The road was very narrow and bumpy. You had to blow your horn to let other cars know you were coming around the one lane curves. Once there, we visited the old bank vault, the old Miner's Union Hall and more. I will let the pictures tell the rest of the story.
