Kapoors Year 4: The Med/India/Sri Lanka travel blog

As we hurried south of Mahdia with the goal of getting to Djerba before dark, we didn’t anticipate the urban sprawl that is Sfax. We had read that there wasn’t much to entice a traveller to stop here, and we had the misfortune to get caught up in the horrible traffic there. We ended up driving almost into the center of the city before we found our way out again towards the highway that would take us south again.

As we drove beside and amazingly long drainage canal, I kept seeing large blue signs saying ‘Tunis’. I finally understood that these were directional signs for the toll highway, and we could have bypassed Sfax altogether if we had managed to get on it. Oh well, c’est la vie, as they say in French here when they’re not speaking Arabic.

We began to realize that there way no way we would reach the ferry to Djerba before dark, so I tried reading about hotels in Gabès while we drove. It didn’t look promising, and we became a little depressed about our prospects. I guess there was a price to pay for dawdling in Mahdia for so long after all.
