Steam rising off lake

"Late for Lunch" by David Manuel

This morning I visited Hot Lake Springs outside La Grande. It was known as "The Mayo Clinic of the West" due, no doubt, to the association of Dr. Phy with the Mayo brothers. Under Dr. Phy, arthritis, tuberculosis, alcoholism and venereal diseases were treated at the clinic. The facility now is being restored by the David Manuel family. It houses a foundry, gallery, restaurant, museum, bed and breakfast and spa. David Manuel is a wonderful sculptor.

Hot Lake lies over a fault line extending along the base of Craig Mountain. The spring is the largest of its kind in the world. It releases 2.5 million gallons of water a day and fills the eight-acre Hot Lake. The mineral springs average 208 degrees Fahrenheit. The waters contain sulfur, calcium, aluminum, magnesium sulfate, sulfides, phosphorous and iron. Of course the sulfur odor dominates.
