This morning I rode the bus for the first time to Walmart. I found two of the items on my shopping list: wheel/tire covers for Daisy and a two-piece sun visor for Sweet Pea. I was tired of dealing with a too-large visor; the new one specifically lists Toyota Echo and many other small cars. Two other items on my list probably will have to be ordered: ceramic cube heater with automatic shutoff and a “Y” sewer hose connection. Walmart used to have the heaters but have sold out and will not re-stock them until next fall. They’re stocking fans now.

Tonight two CARE buses took us to the First Baptist Church to hear the Livingston Swing Big Band, a group made up of musicians from all walks of life. It includes some high school students and many older musicians, including retired band directors. The group was started in 1996 and is a 501 c (3) charitable organization.

The concert was directed by Gerald Fagan. Dr. Mike Shukan, a practicing family medicine physician, was the MC. The band consisted of five saxophones, five trombones, four trumpets, a guitarist, a keyboardist, a drummer and an electric bassist. There were several guest artists: (1) Vocalist Angie Adkins, owner/stylist of Texas Hair Shoppe in Onalaska. She has a beautiful, rather deep voice and sang songs from the 1930s and 1940s. (2) The Swingettes, a jazz vocal trio from Lufkin (I think). They also sang oldies beautifully. (3) S.L.E.D. A male quartet from Houston who sang love songs, swing tunes and comedy numbers a cappella. They were excellent but they teased us by all giving different stories about what S.L.E.D. stands for. I tried, without luck, to find out on the Internet. (4) Dr. Jimmy Simmons of Beaumont. He is an educational administrator and former university president at Lamar University. He is also an excellent musician.

I really enjoyed the entire program and hope to attend future concerts.
