hillside shrine. Buddhas birthday

5 June Day 7 ride (Day 12 on itinerary) to camp just before Lakla la pass. 95ks. Ride time 4hr:40

8ks of gentle climbing through very scenic farmland to the beginning of the climb over Yulong La pass 4520m. Road works here so had to wait about 30 mins to be let through. Concrete road being broken up, though it looked in good condition, probably it will be tar-sealed. Sections of dirt. Not steep but very dusty. Lots of road patches, due to frost /snow damage. Almost at the top, a road worker snuck up behind Nickie and pushed her for about 10m. Cheering and clapping from the people waiting at roadworks in their cars. Nickie just managed to keep her balance .. she was clipped in and in 1:2 gear, legs were spinning too fast as he pushed her….wobbled wildly when he let go. And then…a few seconds later, she heard feet running and this man puffing and laughing , he sprinted about 20m up to her and gave her another push! Quick stop at the top for photos and then began the 8 k descent down to 4100, Exhilarating, but care and a slower speed needed to avoid potholes and road-works. On the flat again we made a pelaton, and with Andrew and Caldon (cycle guide) , the 4 of us made good time over the next fairly flat 35 ks to camp. Passed by an army camp and took photos , then expected to have the army chase us to take our camera . Watched locals climb the hill at our camp to put up new prayer flags and burn incense, it is Buddhas birthday today. Very hot afternoon, many of us cooled off in the river. Pete changed components from his old bike onto the new Giant bike, he will ride it from tomorrow as the pedal crank bearings are loose on old bike.
