LoW Rally at Salmon Lake

This morning I was up early so I could go to Grapeland to meet up with some of my Cen-Tex friends at a three-chapter rally. There were six current Cen-Tex members and one former member, who has joined one of the other chapters. The other two chapters were Lone Star and Border LoWs.

Floyd and Fannie Salmon bought fifty acres of raw land in 1960 and started clearing it and making improvements. They have moved old buildings, some dating back to the early 1900s, and mule-drawn equipment onto the property. They began renovating the buildings, being careful to keep the old style and character intact. The buildings are now being used for cabins, reunion halls, old stores and other businesses. I took photos of only a few of them; I got tired of walking! It’s a big place.

The park hosts an annual bluegrass festival – featuring only acoustic instruments – during Labor Day week end. During Memorial Day week end they host a gospel music festival. During these festivals there are also arts and crafts and home-cooked foods. With over 500 RV spaces they can accommodate a large crowd.

It is an interesting place and, of course, I enjoyed visiting with my friends.
