This was a backwater little town with nothing to see or do and I have no idea why on earth the tour came here. Luckily we only had one night and move on quite swiftly. The following morning I stopped at a nearby church formed completely out of volcanic rock with niches, rooms, tunnels and even an antiquated communication system all carved out of the soft stone.

From there we went on a hike through the Ihlara Gorge, a beautiful canyon full of rock-cut churches dating back to Byzantine times. The path follows the Melendez Suyu stream which meanders through the canyon for 16kmfrom the wide valley at Selime to a narrow gorge at Ihlara Village.
