Our pitch for the night, beside a bubbling stream

The only permission we had

Friday, July 31st.

Although we didn’t take the time to tour Karlsruhe, I read; "When planning this radial city in 1715, the Margraves of Baden placed a mighty baroque palace at its center – an urban layout so impressive it became the blueprint for Washington DC".

We headed into the charming town of Baden Baden and wandered its narrow streets wondering not for the first time if Richard had lost his mind. Finally and almost instantly we found ourselves climbing the switch-backed roads crowded by the forest. We seemed to spring out on top of a mountain with fortunately a viewpoint of the valleys, Mountain ridges, and high meadow pastures. We corkscrewed through vineyards, high mountain villages with their engaging shops selling all sorts of wares; cuckoo clocks, mugs, carvings of everything, to name a few.

When we realized that there were very few campgrounds, as in none, listed for the area, we decided to spend the night dry camping at a city lot in Triberg, an enchanting mountain town, where I had noticed many shops I needed to explore in the morning. It was a very steep descent down the side of a mountain to reach this town. There wasn’t a flat street to be seen anywhere. They either went up or down!!

Two coaches from Slovenia partied until 1 am making it a rather short night.
