Crop Duster

Corn, Corn & More Corn

Soy Bean Rows - Corn Rows - Soy Beans Again - Then...

From On-Ur-Wa RV Park - Onawa, Iowa

Tomorrow we will be saying "goodbye" to the Northwestern region of Iowa. During our stay here, we have traveled many miles on the roads that wind through the vast farmland in this region of the state. We have visited several small communities, some of which had proud heritages from the "old country", others just a mix of hard working people, as we made our road trips. But at every turn, we enjoyed the hospitality of the people working and living in this farm region.

I must say that there were some phrases that were used by us every day and not just once, but many times a day. The first was "Look at all that corn - it is as far as you can see". Another was "Once again corn on one side of the road, soybeans on the other" or maybe "Look how tall that corn is growing" and finally you might have heard "Can you believe that every direction you look, you see either corn or soybeans growing".

Being curious, we "googled" corn & soybean acreage in Iowa. Results were confirmation of what our eyes had seen for the last 2 weeks - Iowa was #1 in corn acreage in 2007 with 14.3 million acres and had 9.2 million acres of soybeans last year.

The beauty in all of this is the rolling hillside planting of both crops, the barns; both old and new, farmhouses; small to very large, wooden to brick and silos in the distance. Also tractors of all sizes, some cattle, horses, and a few sheep and goats scattered on the farms.

We will have fond memories of our stay, but the greatest memory will be the surprise of seeing two old and dear friends awaiting our arrival. Then having them join us in exploring and enjoying the beauty of this area made our Iowa experience one we will never forget.

Till Later........
