Happy New Year!
and
Welcome to my Road Trip 2008
1 January - Mary, Veronika, and I arrived at Mary's house in Yuba City today. This marks the end of my perimeter run. It covered 12,615.9 miles and 163 nights on the road, but who's counting? For details of the trip click on "Perimeter Run" on the homepage.

2 January - Happy Birthday to me.

4 January - Huge Storm hits Yuba City that has the RV a-rockin'-n-a-rollin'.

5 January - I got clobbered today by a big ol' SUV (damn woman driver) while driving Mary's car. I was hit while attempting to cross a busy intersection with a nonfunctioning traffic light which was damaged by yesterday's storm. I think she was on her stinkin' cell phone and driving too fast for the conditions but I can't prove it. Anyway, there were no injuries and I was able to drive the car home. Just the front driver's side corner was crunched and it doesn't really look all that bad.

7 January - I had to drive the girls to school today since I wrecked their ride then I moved the RV to the Travel Home Park on Live Oak Boulevard. Later, the broken car was picked up by the tow company and taken away to the body shop. Betty met me at the car rental place and we picked up a rental car (on the insurance company's tab) so I could get the girls to and from school and their many other activities until Mary gets her car back. They seemed to have a problem with cramming themselves into my little pickup.

I'll be playing taxi for the girls for awhile.

9 January - The preliminary report on the car is not good as the damage is a lot worse than it looks and the insurance company is calling it a total loss. We could have it fixed as a "salvaged vehicle" for about 5400 bucks but then the resale value drops to about zip.

14 January - We decided to scrap the car and start looking for another one.

17 January - The girls and I drove to the body shop to empty out the Saturn and say our goodbyes. It was a sad day for us. Mary was with me when I bought that car new 8 years ago in January of 2000 when she was only 8 years old. It was a great car, mechanically sound with new tires, a new battery and only 55,000 miles on it. What a waste.

19 January - We found Mary a nice little '97 RAV 4 that she loves. The only trouble is it has a manual transmission and she can't drive a stick but is extremely confident that she can learn. However, during that first practice session I am having serious doubts about that.

20-23 January - Mary's driving is improving immensely and I am starting to believe that she might be able to pull this off.

24 January - Mary successfully drives her new car to school for the first time. Congratulations Mary! I'm really proud of you.

26 January - Did a 10k walk in Marysville. My first since July 11th in Davis. We had dinner in the historical Silver Dollar Saloon in Marysville. It was a fun day.

31 January - Betty prepared a nice and tasty dinner for us on my last night in town. I did enjoy the visit with my wonderful daughter and Veronika. However, with the car being wrecked and all this stinkin' rain, it's been a long month and definitely time to move on. Arizona here I come.
